Amouage

Amouage is a luxury perfume house founded in 1983 in
Oman by Prince Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, at the request of Sultan
Qaboos bin Said. Its creation was part of an effort to reconnect the country
with its ancient perfume-heritage - frankincense, oud, myrrh, and other
aromatics that have long been part of Omani culture. The name “Amouage”
combines the Arabic word “Amwaj” (waves) and the French “amour”
(love), reflecting both motion/emotion and its cross-cultural identity.
What sets Amouage apart is its commitment to craftsmanship,
richness of ingredients, and the way each perfume tells a story. The House uses
rare and often expensive materials, blending traditional Middle Eastern notes
like incense, resin, rose, oud, and woods with contemporary perfumers (from
Grasse, Paris, etc.) to produce complex, long-lasting fragrances. The
presentation also echoes its heritage - the perfume bottles often draw from
symbols of Oman, such as the dome of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque or the
shape of the kanjar (the traditional dagger) in some men’s designs.
